Mothers Against Drunk Driving - MADD

Mothers Against Drunk Driving or MADD as it is commonly referred to has made many changes since it first came about in 1980. The goal of its mission is to prevent and stop drunk driving, provide support for the victims of drunk drivers and prevent the drinking of minors. MADD has made many strides and impacts on laws and regulations regarding drunk driving as well as providing information about the effects of drunk driving to the public's attention.

MADD provides education to the general public about drunk driving and provides help for the victims of drunk drivers. They want to provide as much information as possible to the public so that people will think twice about drinking and driving. They also want to make stricter policies about the legal limit of alcohol while driving and compose stronger sentences for DUI offenders which may include mandatory jail terms and treatment for alcoholism.

They also encourage the legal drinking age of 21 regardless of any outside denominations such as religious or medicinal purposes. A current act that they are trying to legislate is a mandatory alcohol breath testing ignition locking device that would prevent anyone from drinking in driving. There is a lot f controversy over the issue now as some think that it would inhibit personal rights if it was mandatory on all vehicles instead of just those of DUI or DWI offenders.

The members of MADD have implemented an eight-point plan which encourages them to revive efforts on impaired driving prevention and increase DWI and DUI enforcement. They also want to impose tougher laws regarding those individuals that continue to drink and drive even after several tickets and sentences. Another point is that they want to reduce underage drinking as a whole and prevent the access that minors have to getting a hold of beer and alcohol. They also want to strengthen the court monitoring systems that courts have in place to monitor individuals who have gotten DUI or DWI sentences.

MADD was the result of one mother's loss of her child due to a drunk driver in 1980. Since then it has evolved into a national organization that works to provide and enforce laws and regulations that deal with driving under the influence and driving while intoxicated. It sanctions stronger and stricter rulings in dealing with the offenders of this terrible crime. They also provide support and help for the victims of those affected by drunk driving.
